- Coffee prep
What grind size?
The grinding level of coffee (grind size) plays a crucial role in allowing the aromas to fully unfold.
Babette Lichtenford
It all depends on the roast and method of preparation. Espresso, or rather coffee grounds for espresso machines, for instance, should be ground very finely (due to the more intensive, but very short period of water contact). For filter coffee, you’ll need a medium grind – depending on the type of filtering.
At a glance:
Stovetop coffee pot: fine grind
AeroPress: medium-fine grind
Manual filter: fine sand-like grind
French Press: semolina-like grind
Why not experiment a little with grind size? But always make sure to use a comparable amount of grounds and water, otherwise you won’t get an accurate result. The rule of the thumb is: the longer the coffee is in contact with water (extraction time), the coarser the grind should be.
