Not everyone has the option to harvest their own lettuce in the garden or on the balcony – but regrowing it on your sill from a stump, that you would usually throw away, that is something that each and every one can do. All you need is a freshly cut stem that you place in a glass of water. Find a sunny spot for it. Done.
The water should be changed every 3 days (and be careful not to drown the stem). The amazing part about it: Within a few days new leaves start to grow from the old stem. Naturally, you won’t get a whole field of lettuce out of it. But it should be enough for a small salad or a topping. The whole thing also works with the stem of radish or spring onions, leek, (the remains of) carrots, red beet, and so on. They all turn into delicious greens – the perfect ingredients for green smoothies or bowls.
And should you have a little more room, you can also plant the stumps and remains in small flowerpots. That works as well. Here, you should keep two things in mind when watering: Not too moist, to avoid mold. Not too dry or they won’t grow.
