Good coffee, good mood.

I am drinking a cup of hot water just now. Not a joke. It is 6.30 in the morning, the birds are chirping, you can even see the sunrise behind the clouds. I am in a terrible mood. Why did I agree to this sh… silly bet, that I would manage to not have my beloved coffee in the morning for a whole week? Pretty dumb. But I wanted to do it, to be as disciplined and resolute as I always am, to proof that I could be in a splendid mood every morning, without this divine smell, without the chocolate-nut aromas, without caffeine. Me. Me, the person who is always so terribly grumpy I the mornings. Well, what shall I say: I am definitely NOT IN A GOOD MOOD.

Therefore, to all my fellow grumpy morning people: Please don’t do it.

Drink coffee. For one thing, it is a multisensory experience which puts a smile on my sleepy face. The smell of freshly ground coffee, the hissing and bubbling sound of the macchina, the crema, the refined interplay of fruitiness, opulence, mouthfeel – all that is spectacular and makes me happy. Of course, the caffeine also plays its part. It is not only reviving, but it also stimulates the production of endorphins, the happiness hormones. Besides, for many people coffee helps relieve headaches (okay, maybe not when you are having a major hangover, but that does not happen too often.)

And – this was news to me: Coffee stimulates the metabolism and can also help with loosing weight (which really accommodates me in spring). Because the caffeine helps to burn fat (lipolysis) increases the heat production and thus, the energy consumption. A study from Singapore in 2020 came to the following result: Overweight people had 4 cups of coffee a day for 6 months. After 6 months they all had successfully reduced their body fat by 4%.

You can believe that or not. But one thing is certain:

Without coffee – without me.
