Using the sun for more independence.

72 degrees, blue sky, the sun is shining. I look through the mail – and need to sit down immediately when I see the energy bill. Wow. I had not expected that despite all the news about rising costs for electricity. What to do?

1. Make coffee. Relax. Breathe. 2. Finally put the “I should really get the mini solar system project going” into action. Here we go.

According to a current survey by the Institut für Demoskopie Allensbach (opinion and market research institute in Germany), 86% of the respondents fear, that there will be difficulties with the energy supply in the upcoming years. I had not thought that far yet, but of course, it is a relevant topic and a good reason to think about the so called “plug-in solar systems”. They consist of 1-2 300 watts photovoltaic modules and can be installed on balconies or terraces (good for those who have one).

The direct current that they produce flows into an inverter (nomen est omen), which turns it into alternating current – which is needed to operate home appliances like the washing machine and the fridge. Once you plug the system into an outlet it finds itself an appliance (like the fridge) – as long as the sun is shining. Another precondition: You need a modern electricity meter, which won’t spin backwards due to the power infeed. Sounds amazing. You won’t have immediate cost recovery, but you will definitely safe money, a lot of money (when the sun is shining). Now you know the principle.

So much for “every bit counts”.

So, I make myself a second coffee and start researching for suppliers. #pluginsolarpanels. How about you?
